Cambridgeshire FA Football Futures Programme
Cambridgeshire FA are dedicated to supporting young volunteers in the County and run a programme which is for 14-23 year olds that want be more involved in providing football in the county. The group will have opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge and connections and have access to various training workshops and courses. PREVIOUSLY AT CAMBS FA FOOTBALL FUTURES
2010 -11 series of events got underway on 30th September at Cambs FA with the KICK OFF event.
This was a sociable evening where a number of activities and quizzes were delivered by two of the senior members of the group.
The Media Workshop in November was popular with those that attended with some very positive outcomes. We discovered a number of talented writers who benefitted from the guidance and advice of Cambridge News Sports Editor, Paul Stimpson.
A Coaching Disabled Footballers Workshop was held at Swavesey in February with tutor Andy Coles. Those attending gained an insight into coaching players with a variety of disabilities such as Cerebral palsy, visual impairment, deaf, amputee football, to name just a few. The session was both tutorial and practical. Young Leaders who attended found the guidance very helpful and expressed an interest in taking the Coaching Disabled Footballers Level 1 Coaching Course once they reach the age of 17.
Our Sports Pathways and Careers evening was a big success. Young Leaders and students from local schools attended the evening, where we had the pleasure to welcome professionals from different occupations in football, sport and related industries. The YLs rotated around tables and had the opportunity to enquire about the occupations from teachers, professional referees, university students, coaches, sports development managers, club secretaries, fitness expert, university lecturers, sports news editors and advisors on job applications, writing CVs and interview techniques.
Additional workshops were held on Futsal, coaching 5-11 year olds, match day management and YLs helped Cambs FA in organisation and delivery of girls festivals, Let the Children Play Festivals and the Mini World Cup.
In June 2011 we had delivery of Football Futures T-Shirts and jackets which will be distributed in reward for the number of hours volunteered by individuals registered with the programme.
Dates and Events for next year are in the planning stage and will be posted on the website and sent out to registered members soon.

Here is a summary of the groups 2009-10 season:
Cambridgeshire FA Young Leaders attended a number of workshops starting with a welcome and introduction session for new members in October.
At the end of October a new workshop was introduced with
FA Tesco Skills Coach manager Matthew Joseph providing an insight into coaching 5-11 year olds. He took a theory and practical session where young leaders were able to look at the different methods of approach to getting the best out of a coaching session.
In November Young Leaders got an introduction and insight into refereeing through the Mini Soccer Referees course
Those attending benefitted from the knowledge and experience of Colin Hills and Bob Spiller.
At the end of November the Young Leaders were invited along to a Coaches Association workshop to gain tips from the Goal Keeping Session. This was delivered by Lance Key. Using Histon squad keepers Lance demonstrated GK skills, warm ups, techniques and GK role in the team. This practical session demonstrated the role and requirements of the team goalie.
The Junior Football Organisers Course took place at Cambridge Regional College in the easter holidays. 16 students attended from across the county and developed their skills in coaching, refereeing, organising and running a tournament. They completed the course by assisting at the Let the Children Play festival in May. Under 7s teams took part in the festival at Impington Village College with the JFO students helping with warm ups, penalty shoot outs, refereeing and general event support.
Young Leaders were introduced to Sports Science in the february half term. Kate DaCosta, Assistant Academy Director from Cambridge Regional College took time to cover subjects including sports nutrition, sports injuries, sports psychology and lifestyle. A look at the elements surrounding sport that need to be considered for players to achieve the best performance possible.
A follow up to the Coaching 5 to 11 Year Old Workshops in April allowed the students to get more practical experience with guidance from FA Tesco Skills Coach manager Matthew Joseph. Matt gave the students an opportunity to deliver their own coaching sessions to a group of 5 - 11 year olds, providing the students with coaching techniques and following this with feedback. Many of the students said this was the best experience of coaching they had had.
Tournaments
This years tournaments are:
Let the Children Play Festivals through April and May
Girls U9s and U10s festivals in May
The Mini World Cup
and U16s/Womens Transition tournament - June
The success of these tournaments relies on the support offered by the Young Volunteers that attend.
National Football Futures - Volunteering and Leadership Camp
The FA organise a National Young Leaders Camp where County FAs are invited to send 2 young leaders, one male, one female, from the County FA group (They have to be aged 16 or 17 on the date of the camp). In 2010 those selected were Ella Phillips-Ansell and Jak Hart.
Young Leaders who were successful in attending the 2011 camp were:
Ryan Stevens
Rebecca Randall Bowen
Kayleigh Anne-Burt (attending on a Beds FA place)
In addition we were delighted that Ella Phillips Ansell returned to Camp as part of The FA Management team for 2011, having been selected from over 100 National Young leaders at last years Camp to develop her leadership skills further.
Ella has been worked with skills coach Matt Joseph and got the chance to attend the England Day at Wembley in 2010 where she assisted the coaches on the haloed turf! 320 children were in attendance and then the coaching staff were treated to the England v USA world cup game on big screen TV at the stadium.
This is just an example of the many opportunities available to young people who wish to become involved in football through Cambridgeshire FA. For those that be volunteer coaches, referees, club officials, or with the view of making sport their future career, the Young Leaders group provides a great stepping stone to future success.
