Match Report Yorkshire vs Cambridgeshire

Following the 2-0 away success against the Lancashire Amateur League in the previous round, the 16 players and manager Nick Baggaley were in high spir

We arrived in plenty of time for our 2pm Kick off at Nostell Miners Welfare FC and the pitch was in excellent condition, despite the weather, and looked ready for action.

Nick Baggaley made two changes to the starting XI that beat the Lancashire Amateur League with experienced defender Jordan Lambert coming in at centre-back for Oliver Brookes and Nick Impey replacing the injured Scott Kingsbury upfront. Elliot Anderson replaced Andrew Wale as the second choice goalkeeper.

The match was a fierce contest throughout and a very physical game. Jordan Traynier was cautioned early on for a reaction to a dangerous challenge from a West Yorkshire midfielder, who also received a yellow card. The match remained at a high tempo for the rest of the half and it stayed goalless at halftime with Yorkshire having played the better football.

The second half was the opposite with Cambridge enjoying good spells of possession; Glenn Hodgson in midfield was excellent throughout, holding the ball well and creating chances. Mason Newman came on as a second half substitute and was electric down the left hand side - on one occasion setting up Martin Turner who struck the ball perfectly on his weaker foot from 18 yards out, only to find the post.

Newman continued to cause problems and two chances followed in quick succession, both headers going just wide. The deadlock was broken with 10 minutes to go as Yorkshire hit us on the counter. The goal was finished off well by Scott Hargreaves and that was how the match finished. A brilliant performance by the Cambridgeshire County League but it is the West Yorkshire League who progress to the Semi-Finals.

Manger Nick Baggaley said: "Obviously it is very disappointing to lose, but that’s football. Everyone held a great account of themselves today and, especially in the second half, played some lovely football.  We just couldn’t get the ball in the net."

We wish the West Yorkshire League all the best in the Semi-Finals and thank them for their excellent hospitality on the day.
