Autism Sensory Bag

Cambridge United Raising Awareness Ahead Of World Autism Acceptance Day

The day is a culmination of a global week-long celebration of those with autism

Ahead of World Autism Acceptance Day on Sunday 2 April 2023, which forms part of World Autism Acceptance Week 2023, Cambridge United wishes to educate people on autism as well as noting its own efforts in helping autistic people.

It's key to understand the impact of autism, not least how many of those on the autism spectrum suffer when it comes to integrating sensory information. This could impact their behaviour, their learning, their social interactions and their participation in everyday activities. Some of Cambridge United's fans have difficulties with sensory processing, with an example being how they could be oversensitive or under-sensitive to sensations, and may have their coping mechanisms to help manage these challenges. Indeed, sensory challenges are now a core feature of autism, and could impact play, meals, socialising, activity participation and sleep.

In light of this, Cambridge United wants to help anyone who is sensitive to loud sound, crowds, and changing positions. To begin with, Cambridge United staff are trained when it comes to assisting those with hidden disabilities and they recognise the sunflower scheme. Furthermore, the club is able to loan out sensory bags to fans which may help them manage the sound and busy nature of the match. The bags contain disposable ear plugs; ear defenders; a stress ball; a fidget toy; sunflower stickers; puzzles; a multi-coloured pen; a Product exchange card (PEC); and emotion cards.

In addition, Cambridge United can provide audio for anyone requiring audio description via single or double headphones. These returnable services are free of charge with no deposit required in return for contact details and the person's location within the stadium. Ticket holders can also follow signs from the main entrance to the Accessibility Information Point to collect their sensory bag. Any steward or hi vis-wearing ' Abbey Helper' is there to help and direct. Bags are available to pre-book.
