Cambridgeshire FA referee to officiate at Wembley
Cambridgeshire FA is delighted to announce that one of our referees, Marc Wilson, has been appointed to the FA Vase final at Wembley Stadium.
We had a chat with Marc to find out about his refereeing journey and how he feels about his appointment.
How long have you been refereeing for?
14 years. I started when I was 14. So in 2003
What made you want to become a referee?
I had always wanted to Referee and I was never that good at playing. It seemed a more logical way to spend a Saturday and Sunday
How did you feel when about being appointed to the final?
I haven't stopped smiling about it since. I was in a little shock at the time. The call came around 11am and the appointment was released at 4pm. Something inside me couldn't believe it was real until I saw it in black and white. Simply the best feeling in the world to be told you have been selected to officiate on a cup final at Wembley.
What advice would you have for young referees who are just starting their referee journey?
When I started at 14 as an Assistant Referee for Waterbeach vs Eaton Socon in the Kershaw Premier League I never thought I would get to where I have. It does take a lot of personal hard work and dedication, but also a lot of support from the many others around you. I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for the coaching from Richard Nichols and the support from the County and RA. I remember attending RA meetings as a 14/15 year old Referee and getting invaluable advice and support from the Counties Senior Referees.
The best advice I could give to anyone at any point of their Refereeing Career is that you never stop learning. Every little bit of advice and coaching helps towards improvement and potential promotions.
