Cambridgeshire based Whittlesey Athletic FC officially switched on their new floodlight system before a game against Cherry Hinton United last week (Wednesday 9 October).

This has been made possible by investment from the Premier League, which has been delivered by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF).

The investment has allowed Whittlesey Athletic FC, who play in the United Counties League Division One at step 6, to install a new LED floodlight system at their home ground, Feldale Field.

Following a recent promotion to step 6, Feldale Field was subject to a ground grading inspection. The new floodlight system consists of six 15m high raise and lower columns ensures that Whittlesey Athletic FC meet the requirements of Category H for the FA National Ground Grading Criteria applicable to their Step level.

The floodlights will help Whittlesey Athletic FC to sustain a team at Step 6, whilst in the future the club hopes to attract more local players to form a new Under 18 team to play under the floodlights, helping with the transition between youth and adult football.

Whittlesey Athletic FC was formed 2014 after the merger of Coates Athletic and Whittlesey United FC. The club now consists of three men’s teams and four junior teams. The floodlights will help support the development and growth of all teams.

The project was made possible by a £32,718 total grant from the Premier League, which is delivered through the Football Stadia Improvement Fund – the sister organisation of the Football Foundation. The additional costs were covered by local businesses, who came together and invested the remaining £14,022 between them.

David Moore, co-chairman of Whittlesey Athletic FC said: “We are extremely grateful to have received the grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund and the Premier League. I’d like to also thank you for attending our opening.”

“We hope the new floodlights will allow our club to continue to develop and offer opportunities to play football for everyone in Whittlesey and the local area and we look forward to Feldale playing host to many more games under the lights in the future.”

Peter McCormick OBE, Chairman of the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, said: “The new floodlights at Whittlesey Athletic FC represent another great boost for a club that is continuing to progress up the football pyramid, now playing in Step 6 in the United Counties League Division One.

“The developments at Feldale Field will enable the club to push on and I look forward to seeing them develop further over the coming seasons. The Premier League, through the FSIF, is committed to improving grassroots infrastructure right across the country and these works are further proof of this.”
